KQ 7 : To what extent good explanations are true in AOK(areas of knowledge) such as Ethics and Religion ?

We use explanations while communicating our beliefs, our faith, our arguments- the way we conceive them and then act according to way we conceive them. The explanations and the Language used in the communication thus becomes an important indicator and manifestation of the essential characteristics of the culture.

When Darwin used ‘Natural Selection’ as explanation to his thesis, he was astute in recognising how people sway to the notion of ‘purposeful design’; how people invoke higher and hidden powers when they come across hard to explain phenomena; how ‘nature’ as all powerful and purposeful selected agency appealed to their faith and beliefs and biases.

Amongst the categories of metaphors used in explanations, the Extended metaphors are most often used to convey ethical and social beliefs through building a larger comparison in the minds of the people. Extended metaphors create stronger characters, stronger images, and stronger stories. The  orientational metaphors provide concept through spatial orientation-up-down, in-out, front-back, on-off, deep-shallow, central-peripheral- however such metaphorical orientations have their roots in physical and cultural experience with different connotations in different cultural settings.
