Title 5 – K Q 4 : How far is the development of various WOK(Ways of Knowing ) related to the duration of the production of knowledge?

In interconnected, interdependent , complex and dynamic systems , having more data and better computing technology is an advantage that empowers us with deeper insights and applications for the production of “ Quality “ knowledge . For example, through sense perception we can observe and know both the measured / predicted with the actual and real in Natural sciences . To have “ Quality knowledge may not be easy in areas of knowing like Religious systems and Ethics where the truth or the real and the actual is subjective to the individual , community and society .

By tradition and practice , Sciences have used Reason , Evidence (Sense perception) , Empiricism to build the foundation for knowledge , while Religions have depended more on Faith , Imagination , Intuition and Emotion for putting together knowing of their respective religions and at the same time recognizing – in varied degrees – the philosophical and metaphysical aspects of the Universe.

Even in area of Ethics Moral fallibilism within the larger epistemological fallibilism , does debate between moral subjectivism and moral objectivism while holding a stand that objectively true moral standards may exist but these standards cannot be reliably and conclusively determined by humans. Thus reinforcing the idea that morality is not merely an opinion or belief that can be explained within relativism of subjectivism. Such persisting issues have not got resolved even after a long duration of time .

In our complex world information, though abundant, is seldom obvious in its implications and it’s not the accuracy and abundance of information rather how that information is interpreted enables us to have “ Quality” independent of duration of time spent on knowledge production.

The physicists have long encountered ignorance about disorder in the atmosphere, in the turbulent sea , in the fluctuations of wild life populations, in the oscillations of the heart and the brain- the irregular , non linear , erratic and discontinuous side . And where classical science stops , Chaos begins. “ Relativity eliminated the Newtonian illusion of absolute space and time; Quantum theory eliminated the Newtonian dream of a controllable measurement process; Chaos eliminated the Laplacian fantasy of deterministic predictability.

Francis Collins, head of the Human Genome Project and an evangelical Christian, In his book, The Language of God: A Scientist Presents Evidence for Belief, argues that “We have to recognize that our understanding of nature is something that grows decade by decade, century by century. But we’re still a long way from understanding the details of much of the universe around us. “
