Title 6 – May 2017 KQ 6 : In context of acquiring and producing Knowledge, to what extent does pattern recognition consolidate cognition?

Far from being linear and one-way, pattern recognition and knowledge acquisition form a complex , interdependent and evolving system with multiple dimensions and constituents. When happening on a subconscious level, pattern recognition is simple and direct –almost innate without any element of inference and interpretation derived from repetition and familiarity.

At the conscious level we interpret the patterns , look for cause and effect relationship, draw connections between the existing pieces and the new, question or ratify the existing and prevailing.

Lately pattern recognition with its elements of frequency , similarity , contiguity , contrast and cause and effect forms the foundation of Hebbian ‘Associationism’ and theories of Neural Connectivity , first suggested by Aristotle while examining processes of remembrance and recall and later by Hume in Basic principle of contiguity.

In contrast to prevalent unknown territories in sciences , knowledge acquired through pattern recognition in the other areas of knowing like Arts , Literature , Ethics and Religion involves preexistence of faith, beliefs and preferences . When we interpret or when the truths dawn on us , we precede by recalling the deeply embedded and entrenched ‘prejuges’ that bring forth recognition of existing truths.
