Title 3 – TOK Essay May 2017 KQ 3 : what is the role of Language in making judgements about the historical events?

Creating the larger and complete picture directs and drives the selection of the individual pieces of evidence . Now , there is a story to tell but the scattered pieces of evidence are not self selecting and self organising – there is an active involvement of the narrator , the presenter , not to forget the interpreter.

RLS : For Example “The historians cultural preconceptions is more of a issue of interpretation , an issue of Categorising and Conceptualising . Religious for us means relating to faith , authority , spirituality and belief while the same concept of Religion may be radically different at the time the evidence was written. Use a word “ fortification” has different meaning than using building a wall or a mound. “

“The difference in use of language in evidence and the language in the historiographic descriptions has its implications on what and how we perceive and understand. For example the motives and strategy of the historical battles are susceptible to interpretation of the historian. The choice of words begins the interpretative process. For example using “ troops” may suggest a clear fighting intent while using “ a group of men” may lose some of the precious information about the intention. Way of thinking in our own times will bear upon how we think about the historical times. “
